    About Seiko

Seiko is Japan's most iconic watch brand, offering exceptional quality across every price range. From the legendary Grand Seiko Spring Drive to the beloved Presage line, Seiko is known for innovative movements, stunning dials, and unbeatable value. The Seiko 5 series remains one of the best entry points into mechanical watchmaking.

    Seiko history in brief

    Founded
    1881
    Headquarters
    Tokyo, Japan

Kintaro Hattori opened a watch and clock shop in Tokyo in 1881 and Seiko produced its first wristwatch in 1913. The company is fully vertically integrated, making its own hairsprings and mainsprings — something few Swiss brands can claim. Seiko launched the first quartz wristwatch, the Astron, in 1969, and its 1965 62MAS was Japan's first professional dive watch. Today the range stretches from the affordable Seiko 5 Sports to the Prospex and Presage lines, with Grand Seiko operating as a separate luxury brand.

    Signature Seiko models

    • Seiko 5 Sports — An automatic watch for around $300 — the classic first mechanical watch.
    • Prospex divers — ISO-rated divers like the 'Turtle' and 'Samurai' with decades of pedigree.
    • Presage — Enamel, Urushi lacquer and porcelain dials at prices Swiss brands can't match.

    Tips for buying a Seiko

    • ▸Seiko's list prices are frequently discounted by retailers — expect 10–25% off on most non-limited models.
    • ▸Check the movement: newer 6R-series calibres offer around 70 hours of power reserve versus 41 hours for the 4R.
    • ▸Limited editions are numerous; buy one because you like it, not as an investment.

Best for: First-time mechanical watch buyers and anyone who values craftsmanship per dollar.
