    About Grand Seiko

Grand Seiko represents the pinnacle of Japanese watchmaking. Known for the revolutionary Spring Drive movement and exquisite dial textures inspired by Japanese nature, Grand Seiko offers finishing quality that rivals brands costing many times more. Their Zaratsu polishing technique produces mirror-like surfaces unmatched in the industry.

    Grand Seiko history in brief

    Founded
    1960
    Headquarters
    Tokyo, Japan

Grand Seiko was created in 1960 to prove Seiko could build a watch as accurate and well-finished as the best Swiss makes. Its 1967 44GS defined the 'Grand Seiko Style' — flat polished surfaces and sharp facets created with Zaratsu polishing. Grand Seiko became an independent brand in 2017. It offers three movement technologies: high-accuracy quartz (9F), mechanical (9S), and Spring Drive (9R), which combines a mainspring with a quartz-regulated glide wheel for a seamlessly sweeping seconds hand.

    Signature Grand Seiko models

    • SBGA211 'Snowflake' — Spring Drive in titanium with a dial inspired by wind-blown snow.
    • SBGW231 — A pure, manual-wind dress watch that shows Grand Seiko finishing at its simplest.
    • Evolution 9 collection — Newer designs with the high-beat 9SA5 and 9RA2 calibres.

Tips for buying a Grand Seiko

    • ▸Grand Seiko finishing is best appreciated in person — visit a boutique before buying online.
    • ▸Pre-owned values are lower than Rolex or Omega, which makes lightly used pieces excellent value.
    • ▸Spring Drive needs a specialist for service; check servicing options in your country.

Best for: Buyers who prioritise dial artistry and case finishing over brand recognition.
