    About Cartier

Cartier has been creating iconic watches since 1904 when Louis Cartier designed the Santos for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. The Tank, Santos, and Ballon Bleu remain among the most recognizable watches in the world. Cartier uniquely bridges fine jewelry and haute horlogerie.

    Cartier history in brief

    Founded
    1847
    Headquarters
    Paris, France

Louis-François Cartier founded the Paris jeweller in 1847. In 1904 Louis Cartier designed the Santos for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, one of the first wristwatches made for men. The Tank followed in 1917, inspired by First World War tanks, and remains one of the most recognisable designs in watchmaking. Cartier is now part of Richemont and makes most of its movements in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.

    Signature Cartier models

    • Tank — The definitive rectangular dress watch, available in quartz and manual-wind.
    • Santos de Cartier — Exposed screws on a square case, with tool-free strap changes.
    • Ballon Bleu — A rounded case with a sapphire cabochon cradled by the crown guard.

    Tips for buying a Cartier

    • ▸Quartz Tank models are an excellent, low-maintenance way into a design icon.
    • ▸Size matters for Cartier: try 'small', 'medium' and 'large' cases — they wear differently than round watches.
    • ▸Ask boutiques about the Privé collection waiting lists if you want a limited historic reissue.

Best for: Buyers who see a watch primarily as design and jewellery rather than a tool.
