    About IWC

International Watch Company (IWC), founded in Schaffhausen in 1868, is renowned for pilot's watches and refined engineering. The Big Pilot, Portugieser, and Aquatimer collections showcase IWC's commitment to functional elegance and in-house movement development.

    IWC history in brief

    Founded
    1868
    Headquarters
    Schaffhausen, Switzerland

The International Watch Company was founded by American engineer Florentine Ariosto Jones, who combined Swiss craftsmanship with American industrial methods in Schaffhausen — the only major brand in German-speaking northern Switzerland. IWC made observation watches for German and British pilots in the 1930s and 40s, and designer Gérald Genta created the Ingenieur SL in 1976. Today IWC is part of Richemont and best known for its pilot's watches, the Portugieser and the relaunched Ingenieur.

    Signature IWC models

    • Big Pilot's Watch — An oversized pilot's watch with a conical crown and long power reserve.
    • Portugieser Chronograph — A clean, elegant chronograph with vertical sub-dials.
    • Ingenieur Automatic 40 — The 2023 revival of Genta's integrated-bracelet design.

    Tips for buying a IWC

    • ▸IWC's 8-year warranty (with My IWC registration) is among the longest in the industry.
    • ▸Pilot's watches come in many sizes; the 'Big Pilot' wears very large, so try it before buying.
    • ▸Pre-owned IWCs often trade below retail — a sensible option for older references.

Best for: Fans of aviation design and engineering-led Swiss watches.
