    Movement Types

**Mechanical**: Powered by a mainspring that must be wound by hand. No battery required. **Automatic**: A mechanical movement with a rotor that winds the mainspring using wrist motion. Also called 'self-winding.' **Quartz**: Battery-powered movement using a quartz crystal oscillator for timekeeping. More accurate than mechanical. **Spring Drive**: Grand Seiko's hybrid — mechanical energy regulated by an electronic circuit. Offers the smoothest sweep hand in watchmaking. **Solar**: Converts light to electricity via a photovoltaic cell. Citizen's Eco-Drive is the most famous example.

    Case Components

**Bezel**: The ring surrounding the crystal. Can be fixed, rotating (for diving), or with a tachymeter scale (for chronographs). **Crown**: The knob used to set the time and date. May screw down for water resistance. **Caseback**: The back cover, which can be solid, display (transparent), or snap-on. **Lugs**: The projections where the strap or bracelet attaches. Lug-to-lug distance determines how a watch wears on different wrists. **Crystal**: The transparent cover over the dial — made from sapphire (scratch-resistant), mineral (affordable), or Hesalite/acrylic (shatter-resistant).

    Dial Elements

**Indices**: The markers indicating hours. Can be applied (raised), printed, or engraved. **Hands**: Indicate hours, minutes, and seconds. Common styles include dauphine, baton, sword, Mercedes (Rolex), and cathedral. **Subdials**: Smaller dials within the main dial, typically for chronograph functions or secondary time zones. **Date Window**: Displays the date, often at 3 o'clock. A 'cyclops' lens (Rolex) magnifies the date for readability.

    Complications

**Chronograph**: A stopwatch function with start, stop, and reset capabilities. **GMT/Dual Time**: Displays a second time zone. **Moonphase**: Shows the current phase of the moon. **Tourbillon**: A rotating cage that counteracts gravitational effects on accuracy. **Perpetual Calendar**: Automatically adjusts for months with different lengths and leap years. **Minute Repeater**: Chimes the time on demand — one of the most difficult complications to produce.

    Water Resistance

**30m / 3 ATM**: Splash-proof only. Not for swimming. **50m / 5 ATM**: Brief submersion, not for swimming. **100m / 10 ATM**: Recreational swimming and snorkeling. **200m / 20 ATM**: Serious water sports and recreational diving. **300m+ / 30+ ATM**: Professional diving. ISO 6425 certification means it's a true dive watch. Remember: water resistance degrades over time. Have gaskets checked annually.

    Materials

**316L Stainless Steel**: The standard for watch cases. Durable and hypoallergenic. **904L Stainless Steel**: Rolex's choice — more corrosion-resistant and harder to machine. **Titanium**: Lighter and stronger than steel, hypoallergenic, but scratches more easily. **Ceramic**: Extremely scratch-resistant, used for bezels. Won't fade from UV exposure. **Carbon Fiber / Forged Carbon**: Lightweight, strong, and with a distinctive appearance. Popular in sports watches.
